This is a little side project of mine, which I had in mind for quite some time but I've been waiting for a '97SE project, which has the DTS audio synced to it, so that I can cut the video based on its frame-count and now I finally had all the resources I needed, thanks to Team Blu's '97SE release.

This is a reconstruction of the 1997 Special Edition version of STAR WARS, which was shown in cinemas world wide and had fewer alterations than the 2004 DVD version and fewer still than the BD version. Plus it didn't have screwed up colors and by all accounts it had a pretty awesome sound mix (unlike the screwed up DVD and BD mixes) which we now have in the highest quality as heard in cinemas in 1997, thanks to Jetrell Fo and CapableMetal, who extracted it from the original theatrical DTS discs and dark_jedi, who synced it and encoded a DTS-HD track from it.
It is a side project to the Despecialized Edition - it uses the Despecialized Edition v2.5 master as its main video source and puts the changes made in 1997 back in, mostly using the Blu-Ray version and in case of 1997 changes, which were redone in later versions, this version combines the BD footage with Team Blu's (Dark Jedi and You_Too) 1997 version.
The color correction is still based on a fade free 1977 I.B. Technicolor Print, just as the 1997 version supposedly was. The forced subtitles in the Greedo scene were left the same as in v2.5 and the subtitles in the Jabba scene (along with the rest of the 1997 elements of the footage were used from the Team Blu version).

  9. This is a reconstruction of the 1977 theatrical version of STAR WARS. The original shots were painstakingly restored using
  10. various sources (listed below) and the film received an extensive shot by shot colour correction based on a fade free 1977
  11. The remastered version (v2.0) represented a significant improvement in picture quality over the earlier version.
  12. Version v2.1 further improved upon the previous version mainly by refining the colour correction but also by replacing many of the despecialized shots with higher quality ones.
  13. Version v2.5 offers few more little tweaks to the picture and contains an unprecedented number of audio options, including lossless
  14. DTS-HD tracks for the original mixes (the original 70mm six-track was recreated by hairy_hen, the original stereo mix was captured
  15. from LaserDisc PCM and fixed up by hairy_hen and the original mono mix was restored by Belbucus from a VHS recording), an isolated
  16. score, four different commentary tracks, dubbing tracks in ten different languages and dialects and a British commentary
  17. Note from Towne32: Version 2.6 featured a shot-by-shot color adjustment that I performed on Harmy's 2.5 MKV source.
  18. Harmy was informed after the release of 2.5 that the Technicolor reference scans that he based his color grading on were
  19. raw scans and not corrected to the way the print actually looks projected. Furthermore, Star Wars was the final major
  20. Technicolor film produced in the West, and the quality control in the UK lab during those final days was poor, resulting
  21. in less than ideal color including the prominent green tones that Harmy then incorporated into Despecialized Remastered.
  22. The color of 2.6+ is still vibrant, but some of the strong overtones and inconsistencies of 2.5, based on those raw scans,
  23. have been reduced or removed. Additionally, several shots that were based on the low resolution 2006 GOUT DVD in 2.5 have
  24. been upgraded using Team Negative 1's 35mm 'Silver Screen Edition' after I manually cleaned, stabilized, degrained, and color
  25. Version 2.7 is of higher quality, thanks to Harmy. He sent me the lossless encode of his previous release, allowing me
  26. to encode 2.7 without any generational encoding losses. Additionally, I corrected an error where several Mos Eisley shots
  27. were actually using GOUT-based footage in 2.6, rather than the 35mm sources of Harmy's 2.5. Many additional color changes
  28. were made to correct minor inconsistencies and to remove green tones from some desert scenes, as well as the Death Star
  29. interior walls in some cases. The 'A Long Time Ago' card is now from a cleaned up version of the 35mm scan. And the Greedo
  30. subtitles have been replaced with an impressive rendering of the 35mm text made by CatBus. Additionally, Darth Lucas
  31. rotoscoped the lightsaber blade in Ben's hut from the 35mm print. The version 2.7 MKV includes several subtitle and
  32. audio dub languages not available previously, also thanks to CatBus, including a fixed Castilian track.
